FoodSecurity
    Overview

With an expanding global population set to reach 9 billion in 2050, meeting the demand of such a large number of people will put enormous pressure on food production systems. To add to the challenge of producing sufficient, safe and nutritious food for the future, the focus currently is on reducing the number of hungry and malnourished people in the world, estimated to be 1 billion and 2 billion respectively.

It is well known that there is enormous potential to increase yields of farmers worldwide through access to knowledge, improved varieties, inputs, and markets. In addition to optimizing global agricultural systems, sub-Saharan Africa is estimated to hold up to 60% of the world’s remaining uncultivated land suitable for farming, making the region’s agriculture an investment hotspot and possible world food security solution.

The conference will bring together central government departments and bodies, representatives from farming organisations, environment, business, political and agricultural consultants, academics, scientists and researchers, regional development specialists, environmental groups, policy analysts, GP's, directors of food processing and food production plants, retail analysts, procurement professionals, sustainability managers, rural communities, and all those interested from the public, private and third sectors.

Discussions will focus on South Africa’s role in international food security, the global and regional challenges of sustainable food production, regional and international policies as well as strategies and initiatives for a sustainable increase of food production that benefits the environment, the economy and the farmers.
