THE BACKGROUND
In his recent State of the Nation address, President Jacob Zuma announced his goal of creating 5 million jobs by 2020. It has been suggested by Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan that SMEs will play an important role in reaching this target as the sector employs 68 percent of the working population in South Africa. So why not create 5 million jobs by creating 1 million businesses?
THE PROBLEM
There are a number of variables that can/will contribute to the unsuccessful growth of the SME sector. Arguably the most prevalent of which are:
- Poorly conceived national SME strategy
- Lack of big business 'buy in' or support
- Large segments still not being competitive
- Lack of entrepreneurial and business skills
- Limited or lack of technical skills
- A funding deficiency
- Limited use of modern technology
- Limited graduation of businesses, e.g. from micro to small, small to medium, medium to AltX
THE SOLUTION
Service Providers to the SME sector are the key to ensuring the successful establishment and preservation of South African Entrepreneurs and SMEs. As you can see, the correct Service Provider is capable of fixing each of the above mentioned problem areas for SMEs.
Hence the need for the SMEs Service Providers Workshop that will bring together various service providers and a number of small business owners. This workshop will therefore provide a basis for getting the small business sector, with its enormous potential for job creation, firing.
Moreover, Omega Investment Research intends bringing together the workshop presentations in a public report that will offer entrepreneurs all over the country with a ready-guide to starting and running their businesses.
